Dental implants are the next best thing to having your natural teeth back.
Losing a tooth or having one extracted can leave an uncomfortable gap. Beyond the cosmetic issue, these gaps can also lead to long-term dental problems. Dental implants offer an ideal solution.
At Morrin Dental in Newcastle, we place implants using an advanced guided system. With inhouse CBCT imaging as well as digital scanning we create a guide which eliminates many of the risks of implant placement and allows for less invasive and more accurate implant placement. Creating better treatment outcomes for our patients.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots inserted into the jawbone that are used to replace missing teeth. Because they closely mimic the look and function of real teeth, dental implants provide an attractive alternative to dentures or bridges.
A dental implant is made up of three key parts:
- Fixture: Inserted into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root.
- Abutment: Connects the fixture to the crown.
- Crown: Placed on top of the abutment, serving as the visible, natural-looking tooth.
Why choose dental implants?
Dental implants offer a range of functional and cosmetic advantages:
- Natural appearance: They are tailored to match the shape and colour of your natural teeth, ensuring your smile remains flawless.
- Long-lasting: Fused securely to the jawbone, dental implants are a permanent solution. With good oral care, they can last for many years or even a lifetime.
- Comfortable: Implants eliminate the discomfort and potential embarrassment associated with removable dentures.
- Hassle-free: Unlike dentures, implants don’t need to be taken out for brushing, making daily care simple.
- Promotes oral health: Missing teeth can reduce your chewing ability by up to 10% and put extra pressure on your remaining teeth. Since dental implants don’t impact surrounding teeth, they help support long-term oral health.
Three stages of the dental implant process
The entire dental implant procedure can take between three and nine months, depending on various factors such as implant placement, the patient’s age, and aesthetic needs.
1. Implant placement
The process begins with the placement of the dental implant into your jaw. A titanium fixture is inserted into the bone under local anaesthetic. This implant is then left for several months to integrate with the bone.
2. Abutment placement
In the next step, the abutment is attached to the implant fixture to secure it. At this point, we will take impressions of your mouth to create a custom crown.
3. Crown fitting
In the final stage, the crown or veneer is fitted to the implant, completing the restoration and filling the gap left by your missing tooth.
Are dental implants suitable for everyone?
Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. Your dentist will assess several factors to determine your suitability:
- Bone strength: Adequate bone density is essential for the implant to successfully fuse with the jawbone. If necessary, bone grafting may be considered to increase bone volume.
- Healthy gums: You must have healthy gums to support the implant structure. Maintaining gum health is crucial for the long-term success of the implant.
- Good oral hygiene: The durability and effectiveness of dental implants rely on excellent oral hygiene and regular dental checkups. Key practices for keeping implants in good condition include proper oral care, quitting smoking, and attending routine dental appointments.
