So many times we as parents are focused on the health of our toddler’s teeth that we forget about ensuring their gums stay healthy as well. Healthy gums in toddlers can help prevent bacteria build-up and pain associated with teething. So, our experienced children’s dentistry team would like to present you with some tips on how to ensure your toddler’s gums remain healthy.
Clean That Pacifier
Some toddlers are still using a pacifier as they grow, but you should ensure that pacifier is always clean. Run through a dishwasher or clean it by placing it in boiling water for a few minutes. Don’t use your own mouth to clean it, because you’ll transmit your own oral germs. Don’t dip the pacifier in sugar or juice to prevent sugar build-up.
Begin the Brushing Routine
Begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they start to come in. Because they won’t understand why it’s important to spit out toothpaste, use un-fluoridated toothpaste, and only a small amount. This helps them learn how to brush early and establish a brushing routine they will carry throughout their life.
Forgo Sugary Foods
Foods high in sugar help to create a moist, warm environment that bacteria loves. This same bacteria is what leads to tooth decay and gingivitis. It’s best to forgo foods high in sugar when possible. Sweet potatoes and soft, cooked carrots help to give your child a little taste of sweetness, but without all the sugar.
Start Flossing
Flossing is not only for those that have a full set of teeth. You can begin flossing your child’s teeth as soon as they have more than one tooth in a row. Use flat, side dental tape, which is great for the large spaces in between children’s teeth. Flossing now will be a habit your child carries on throughout his childhood and into adulthood.
